Madison Beer — Toronto 2026 NEW

I saw Madison Beer a few years ago in Chicago and left that show thinking I would never put myself through another Madison Beer concert. Somehow, I just made the mistake of seeing her again in Toronto. Unfortunately, my opinion hasn't changed. If anything, the second show made the problem even clearer: I really like Madison Beer's music, but I absolutely do not like watching Madison Beer perform live.

The biggest issue is that the show is incredibly slow. There are a lot of beautiful songs in her catalog, but instead of finding ways to turn them into an engaging live experience, the concert spends an enormous amount of time sitting in the same general mood. Madison spends a significant portion of the show sitting on stairs or performing in a very restrained manner. After a while, the whole thing starts to feel less like a concert and more like watching someone listen to their own album with some stage lighting.

And then there's the talking. Madison Beer talks WAY TOO MUCH. There are already long stretches of slower material, and the frequent talking sections make the pacing even worse. Just when it feels like the show might finally pick up some momentum, everything stops again for another extended conversation. I have no problem with an artist connecting with the audience, but there has to be a balance. Here, the talking became another thing working against the show's momentum.

That's particularly frustrating because her music is actually quite good. Songs such as “Reckless,” “Selfish,” “Good in Goodbye,” “Make You Mine,” and “Home to Another One” work extremely well on record. The production, atmosphere, and vocal arrangements create a distinctive sound. The problem is that much of that magic doesn't translate to the stage. The songs often remain so close to their subdued recorded versions that there isn't enough musical or visual excitement to compensate.

The backing tracks also became impossible to ignore. There was an absurd amount of prerecorded vocal material throughout the performance. I'm not saying she was literally lip-syncing every song, but there were moments when the amount of backing vocal support made the line between singing live and singing along with a recording extremely blurry. When you're watching a concert, you want to feel like you're hearing something being created in the room. Too much prerecorded vocal material takes away from that.

The setlist itself actually looks better on paper than it felt in the building. There are plenty of good songs here, and the three-act structure gives the show some organization. There are extended intros, interludes, rearrangements, and moments where songs connect with one another. “Good in Goodbye” was even played as the surprise-song selection, with “Homesick” being the other option.

There were definitely moments I enjoyed. “BOYSHIT” provided some energy early on, “Spinnin” had an extended intro, and “Make You Mine” got an extended outro. “Lovergirl” included a barricade walk, which at least got Madison moving around the venue. The closing run of “Baby,” “angel wings,” “for the night,” “free,” “complexity,” “lovergirl,” and “make you mine” was also a better stretch of the show.

But ultimately, the good songs couldn't overcome the pacing. I've seen thousands of concerts, so I have a pretty extensive frame of reference for what constitutes a boring live show. The Fray remains in a class of its own as the absolute most boring concert I've ever seen. Madison Beer has now firmly established herself in the next tier, making her my number two and number three most boring concert experience.

That's what makes this especially disappointing. I genuinely like Madison Beer's music. If I were reviewing her albums, we'd be having a completely different conversation. Her recordings have atmosphere, personality, and some really strong pop songwriting. But concerts need to be more than the album played in front of an audience, and Madison's show doesn't do enough to make the live experience compelling.

I gave Madison Beer a second chance after the Chicago show. Toronto unfortunately confirmed exactly why I said I wouldn't go again. The music stays in my rotation. The concerts can stay off my schedule.
